Third Street Center Campaign

This art installation was created through a process that combined felting and embroidery. The original concept was of an art piece that was made of individual felted "stones" that combined to make a complete whole.  The spiraling stones that have names embroidered on them represent the financial support that various organizations and individuals provided to the Third Street Center.  All of the interior stones without names represent the energy contributed by the community at large.

Each stone was made by forming an interior ball of wool which had a color layer added to the outside. They were then wet felted by applying hot water and soap while massaging in a circular motion.  I used wool sweater scraps and old discarded wool yarn to create the interiors of the larger stones, before applying roving to the outside and then a color layer.

Once the stones were dry they each got a "collar" around the perimeter to add definition.  The collars were made from sweaters that were donated by friends and family or collected from thrift stores. I wanted to use as much recycled materials as possible as the intention of the whole center was one of reuse and energy efficiency. The sweaters were also felted before being cut and sewed for the stones.  When the larger stones were completed each one was hand embroidered with the name of a donor. The stones are arranged by donor levels, with the interior and largest stones representing the larger donations and each succeeding color and size change representing a shift in donor levels.

I enjoyed the creative process very much and am very happy to be a part of the Third Street Center.

-- Jill Scher

Artist and Third Street Center tenant, Jill Scher, unveiled her Donor Recognition display just in time for the opening on June 19th.

The display recognizes all the contributions to the Capital Campaign over $2,500. It is mounted in the front entry hall.

Jill is a fabric artist so the display is made from felted wool "stones".  In keeping with the reuse and redesign theme of the Center, the wool is from old sweaters from Carbondale residents. The materials is overdyed in different colors based on the level of giving.

Stop by Third Street and take a look.  It's even more impressive in person.
